FirstLight Home Care of Rutherford County Marks Opening During National Home Care Month

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (October 31. 2016) – November is National Home Care Month, an observance that recognizes the freedom and support home care provides to people who need assistance with the important activities of daily living. So it’s only fitting that November brings a new home care resource for people in Rutherford County, as well as the communities of Murfreesboro, Nolensville and Smyrna. FirstLight Home Care of Rutherford County is now open.

The population of people ages 65 and older in Tennessee is quickly nearing 1 million, a number that will only continue to grow with the aging of Baby Boomers. Also at the 1 million mark is the number of Tennesseans – many of them seniors – who are living with a disability.

FirstLight Home Care of Rutherford County provides non-medical home care for members of these populations, as well as those recovering from illness, injury or surgery; new mothers; and anyone who may need assistance managing activities where they live. Non-medical home care is one of the fastest-growing healthcare segments. Among its primary benefits is its contribution to quality of life, most notably enabling people to maintain independence in their homes.

The data for seniors alone makes the case for home care. According to a study conducted by the AARP Public Policy Institute, 87 percent of adults ages 65 and older want to stay in their current homes and communities as they age. But many of them will need help doing so.

That’s why Mike and Jane Deguglielmo, owners of FirstLight Home Care of Rutherford County, made the move to bring one of home care’s leading providers to the community.

“We’ve long considered the possibility of starting our own business, and we knew home care would be a meaningful way to do that,” Deguglielmo said. “We’re excited about building something important for our community.”

In addition to National Home Care Month, November is also National Family Caregivers Awareness Month. Family caregivers provide regular physical, emotional or household support to a loved one. Home care can be a lifeline for the family caregiver, who is estimated to spend an average of 20 hours per week caring for their loved ones, at a personal cost of an average of $5,530 per year in out-of-pocket expenses. FirstLight provides the care that is essential to daily life, while helping minimize the demands on family caregivers.

FirstLight Home Care of Rutherford County is located at 2615 Medical Center Parkway, Suite 1560, in Murfreesboro.
